Black Rose Writing
Red Fox Woman, by Judy Ann Davis, is a mixture of western, mystery and romance. Set in the Colorado Territory in 1868, the main character, Pennsylvania redware potter Julia Gast, flees to the West to set up a pottery business, raise horses and hopefully avoid secrets from her past, including a ruthless fiancé.

When Flint Ashmore rides into the ranch he thought he purchased from a now deceased neighbor, he is surprised to find the potter squatting on his land. Both Flint and Julia are equally surprised when they discover that the ranch has been deeded to Julia and Betsy Ashmore, adopted sister of Flint and his three brothers.

In order to get money to start her horse ranch, Julia makes ring flasks and pottery to sell. (Ring flasks, pictured on the book cover, were used by the workers in the mid-1800’s to take drinking water to the fields.) Julia also aligns herself with a renegade Indian to help her gather horses to sell to the army. It is Two Bears who nicknames her Red Fox Woman because of her red hair.

When unknown enemies try to steal Julia’s stock and injure Betsy Ashmore, Flint and Julia must work together to find the culprits and to find the peace and happiness both are seeking.

Author Judy Ann Davis creates captivating characters who steal the reader's attention in Red Fox Woman, her first novel. Throughout the cleverly written tale, she introduces true characters of the Old West - scoundrels, four gun-toting brothers, a colorful, renegade Indian, a bumbling sheriff, and a willy old rancher who teaches the heroine, Julia Gast, that despite the odds, anything is possible with persistence. It is a well-told western, a humorous mystery, and a delightful romance. Best of all, it is a fun read which is hard to put down.
